BGT Final WINNERS 2009: DIVERSITY

So, after a dramatic, traumatic and overall enjoyable…matic contest, Britain’s Got Talent 2009 has come to an end…

After a week of performances, the shortlist came down to Aiden Davis, Hollie Steele, 2 Grand, Julian Smith, Stavros Flatley, Shaheen Jafargholi, Shaun Smith, Flawless, Susan Boyle and Diversity.  The top three finalists were dance act DIVERSITY, singer Susan Boyle and saxophonist Julian Smith.

In a shock victory, street dancers DIVERSITY won the reality TV contest beating Scottish singer Susan Boyle. The result, will see the dance-troupe win the prize of £100,000 and perform at the Royal Variety Performance this year in front of Her Majesty the Queen.

Sky News reported that, bookmakers are said to have made a fortune because of the unexpected result.

“We are in shock and have made a six figure sum in what has been the biggest surprise in reality TV history. Susan was a certainty,” said William Hill’s spokesman Rupert Adams.

William Hill estimate that over £3m was bet on the show in the final hour and managed to avoid a potential multi-million pound loss with their victory, as Susan Boyle had attracted the lion’s share of the bets to win.

Celebrity: Beyond 15 minutes of fame >

I came across this great article from PR Week in which celebrity and superstardom are discussed. An area desired by many, but achieved by few they discuss how you can ensure your celebrity client stays on the A-list?

An example of this being the frumpy middle-aged woman with bushy hair who initially disturbed the crowds but soon opened her mouth and instantly became a worldwide hit. Ordinarily you would think that’s very unlikely, but Susan Boyle did this wowing the audience while auditioning for Britain’s Got Talent, it quickly became the most viewed YouTube clip ever.

With reality shows currently saturating TV schedules with promise to transform ‘ordinary’ people into stars overnight industry figures including Sara Lee, publicity and comms manager at Talkback Thames, Taylor Herring managing partner James Herring and The Corporation CEO and founder Gary Farrow.

It offers some good points on celebrity standing and longevity with the best practices for maintaining an individual’s popularity.

Click here for the full-story and click here for an interesting blog spot from another idustry big-gun, Chris McCafferty, Director of Shine Communications digital offering who comments on Susan Boyle’s widespread fame and who is financially capitolising on this.

ENJOY.

One to watch: trip >

Alex Child aka Trip grew up in Hammersmith, West London. After the blur of college and a set of A levels that spelt DUDE, Trip found himself making and performing music across the capital at mates studios, on pirate radio stations and at open mic nights as a live vocalist and MC.

After winning numerous Jump-off ‘one bout MC battles’ and hosting the DMC world championships, a chance meeting with the Scratch Perverts led to another chance meeting with Killa Kela. Not long after, Trip was touring the world with both acts, supporting bands such as NERD, Justin Timberlake, Busta Rhymes, Redman and Outkast.

Since moving to Holloway Boulevard in North London, Trip began to pen his debut solo album collaborating with James Rushent from Does It Offend you Yeah? and producer Lance Thomas (Ladytron etc). Now completed, the album ‘ShortCuts‘ is a tragi-comic kaleidoscope of city life as seen through the eyes of a 24 year old Londoner. Think The Streets and The Twang vs the Arctic Monkeys and The Clash with a slight hint of Lily Allen – Trip fuses melodic indie-rock beats with slight hip-hop treats evident in songs such as limited 7″ release of the irreverent rant that was Who\’s That, which picked up specialist radio play and was voted Tune of the Week in DJ Magazine. Music Week has also tipped Trip as “one to watch”…

As all the songs on ShortCuts are lyrical vignettes based around Holloway Road ( Holloway Boulevard!), North London, Trip decided to shoot an entire movie for the album rather than occasional videos for individual singles. Called DayTrip, the movie was shot by 11 different directors over a 24 hour period. Each director chose a song from the album and the film was shot in the running order of the album. Each director had 2 hours with Trip to shoot their video before he moved onto a different location and director to shoot another song from the album. Each director then had 24 hours to edit their short and the entire film was shown 24 hours later in a Soho screening room. The beginning of each video starts with the same shot that ends the video preceding it, and each video has a clock showing real-time as Trip moved through his 24hour journey.

DayTrip‘ will be released free accompanying the new single ‘River Phoenix’ – check out an acoustic version below – which is released on independent label Autonomy Recordings with the album ‘ShortCuts‘ coming soon…
