One Word. LEGION…>

Legion poster

First shown at this years Comic-Con, the extended trailer of Legion was revealed. Causing excitement at the event  it seems few have really clocked onto this as it goes under the movie-radar. Despite this, having looked at the footage it appears to be something special.

Legion stars British actor Paul Bettany and whilst the full synopsis is still a little shady (at time of going live anyway) the general plot reads like so: Archangel Michael (Bettany) has disbanded himself from God’s rule after the almighty loses faith in humanity and attempts to cleanse the earth. In an apocalyptic battle, mankind’s lone hope rests on Michael a a group of strangers who together must protect a pregnant woman who’s unborn child could be the second coming of the messiah.

Directed by Scott Stewart. Bettany is joined by Dennis Quaid, Tyrese Gibson, Jon Tenney, Charles S. Dutton, Lucas Black, Kate Walsh, Doug Jones, Adrianne Palicki, Kevin Durand, Willa Holland. Distributed in the the States by Screen Gems and by Sony Pictures in Europe, the 2010 supernatural release looks worth it’s weight in gold, incense and myrrh.

A ‘reputable’ survey?! Questionable…>

British consumers rank top 50 companies by reputation

A recent survey by the Reputation Institute has revealed that the determining factors behind the most reputable companies, as perceived by the British public were transparency and ethics.

Marks and Spencer, Smith & Nephew, Cadbury and Morrisons are ranked as the most reputable companies according to the survey of more than 5,000 consumers. It revealed that next to delivering strong products and services, consumers wanted companies to act transparently and ethically, and to prove that they care about society.

These results highlight how the worlds banks and most recently, the MPs expenses scandal has affected peoples level of trust as they opt for good honest brands and companies to consume in these times of distrust and economic downturn but do the results really reflect the nations views?!

A number of comments on the Marketing magazine website post question on survey’s validity. The opinions question this and in theory, every other survey or poll flagging how for example, 5,000 subjects does not necessarily represent the 60 plus million other British resident’s thoughts and beliefs.

Aware that reality of surveying the entire British public is unachievable, this is not the only flaw, the spread on scores… there are 9 companies with a score of roughly 69 and the ranking is based on a second decimal place and if you take normal boundaries for confidence, intervals on the actual scores for a “survey” this whole premise of ranking at this micro score level is nonsense from a professional research perspective.

Additionally the companies featured in this do not appear to be the ones Joe Public would immediately recognise, as it is a consumer survey surely the likes of Google and the BBC would be mentioned?! Whilst mediahustler is a rather media-savvy individual, it still took a few moments to clock some of the companies so how would everyday folk be able to give a knowledgeable and therefore recordable opinion?!

It unfortunately brings into question the transparency of these results, guess we can’t believe everything we are told – news flash?! No, just a rant….

Reebok Pump’s 20th Anniversary >

In a year which has already seen the return of questionable fashion trends such as figure-hugging leggings, the body con dress and polka dots, Reebok is set to return to the 1980s to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Reebok Pump.

Reebok Pump

The brand is gearing up for its presence at urban wear tradeshow Bread & Butter in Berlin this summer, where its key new Pump ranges will be unveiled.

The original Reebok Pump was a collaboration between Reebok’s Paul Litchfield and industrial design firm Design Continuum. It was released in 1989, as a basketball high-top shoe.

The 1990s saw Reebok promote the shoes with celebrities such as Greg Norman, Bill Walton and Michael Chang with the strapline ‘Pump up and air out’. Partly describing the Pump operation and partly a stab at rival Nike’s Air cushioning, the Pump campaign proved popular for Reebok.

Despite its price of around £100, it became something of a status symbol on urban basketball courts and eventually in suburban high schools. After the success of the basketball shoe, Reebok designed pump shoes for football and other sports.

Reebok is planning a series of global retail partnerships to promote the 20th anniversary with new footwear and clothing ranges, and campaign activity through its agencies M&C Saatchi, DDB and Glue.

Low-key promotional activity has already started. ‘Reebok Pump 20th Anniversary’ has already sponsored menswear designer Christopher Shannon’s London Fashion Week show this year, which saw the designer show new Reebok designs the Reebok Ex-O-Fit SG and Reebok AXT Pump trainers which inspired his latest collection.

Microsoft’s ‘FUN HOUSE’ – an advertising success…! >

Thanks to Apple the standard of marketing undertaken by computer and tech companies has dramatically increased.

Apple showed the world that tech products can be ‘sexy’ and marketed creatively. The latest brand in this realm to take a creative approach to advertising is Microsoft. New Zealand agency Y&R zoomed in on the idea of home entertainment for this series of ads for the software giant. Promoting Microsoft Vista, which allows you to access your phone, music and photos etc from your PC, the ads are anchored around the idea of making your home a theme park of entertainment – a bouncy castle of fun.

This is very smart indeed, it highlights how the market is changing and creative ideas are achieving heights far beyond previous examples, tapping into the lateral and imaginative thinking that coax’s our child-like state to make an appearance whilst evoking our aspirational need to get involved.

Music Festivals 2009 >

So if it hasn’t yet clicked, the festival period is quickly approaching, a sign of this is the blazing sun which appears set to offer us hot days for the summer day’s ahead and the barrage of marketing campaigns promoting the music gatherings through various brand partnerships to win tickets and such.

2008 saw some huge acts and memorable sets, note Jay-Z at Glastonbury and 2009 promises to be bigger and better.

Headliners this year include the Kings of Leon, Radiohead & the Arctic Monkeys (Leeds Festival– 28th-30th August), The Killers, Oasis & The Wombats (V Festival– 22nd-23rd August), The Prodigy, Franz Ferdinand & Lady GaGa at Glastonbury (24th-28th June). In addition the UK based festivals, a lot of european stages have been causing a lot of excitement over the years, higlights including Barcelona’s Benacassim and Serbia’s EXIT festival whose line-up is very similar to the above but generally offer a better atmosphere at a fraction of the price despite their locations.

mediahustler has already confirmed his attendance to the three day fortress festival EXIT (9th-12th July with acts including Moby, Manic Street Preachers, Grandmaster Flash, Kissy Sell Out, DubFire, Korn, Lily Allen and more) and Victoria Park’s LoveBox (18th-19th July / N.E.R.D. Frankmusik, Florence & The Machine, Ladyhawke, Simian Mobile Disco and Chipmunk).

Other weekenders which massively appeal are the Secret Garden Party(23rd-26th July), hidden away in fields of Huntingdonshire. Their line-up includes Jarvis Cocker, the Guildean Gang, The Holloways and mediahustler favourite, TRIP. In addition to the music, SGP has an array of , let’s say ‘alternative’ acitivites such as naked Jenga, paint wars and the burning of a pirate ship…

This year is sure to equal if not surpass the usual antics & shenanigans of this event various spectacles and parades, art installations and theatre performances. Out of all the festivals SGP is one of the friendliest and the atmosphere is second to none. A definite if you are new to the festival scene.

Another one high on the agenda is the electric dance festival Global Gathering (24th-25th July), known to attract people from all over the world is preparing for festival just as big as last year. 2008’s best moments included an awesome set from Mark Ronson with an appearance from Wiley for a rendition of ‘Wearing My Rolex’, the incredible sight of the Red Arrows soaring through the sky paying homage to the event and a great set from artist Killa Kella.

Headliners this year include Pendulum, Orbital and Paul Van Dyk – look out for key sets from E.R.O.L. James Zabiela, the Scratch Perverts & DJ Yoda too.

‘CITING!

CHU it up…! >

pg1725

mediahustler had the great fortune to meet up with grafitti veteran CHU today.

Visiting his Hackney based studio was a great experience, the guy has been doing this since the early eighties and it is evident he has gotten it down to a fine art. Looking at some of his latest work, there is definitely no sign of him slowing down – in fact, it appears things get better with age…

Above and beyond the usual tags on the streets these days, CHU is pushing out some special pieces that set him aside from the rest of the spray-can bandits, one example of this being his work with 3D in which his manipulation of stereoscopics mean his projects really do jump of their surface – it’s massively impressive and word on the street is, CHU will be doing a one off, ‘big project’ to mark the 10th anniversary of this procedure and to pay homage to one of his biggest inspirations that will blow Londoners minds!

To see some examples of the Walsall born artist including collaborations with the Tank Girl and Gorillaz illustrator Jamie Hewlett for the ‘ Monkey Train ‘ in which the two decorated a Virgin Pendolino (9 carriages) train on its maiden voyage to Manchester Piccadilly depicting a scene each from the forthcoming theatre production of ‘Monkey: Journey to the West’.

Click here. for his portfolio and find some examples of his work below…

(freestyle on static tube train in East London)

CHU also mentioned he will be doing a lot of live work over the summer including some stuff at Glastonbury so if you are there make sure you check him out as you won’t be disappointed.

WATCH-ME-MAN!

Kanye West, this isn’t your best! >

Kanye West. Check. Rihanna. Check. Good video. Un-check…

…that’s right, whilst attempting to take the usual artistic route, ‘Yeezy’ introduces the latest music video for the track “Paranoid” (taken from his critically acclaimed 808s & Heartbreak album) but in mediahustler’s opinion it just doesn’t impress.

Whilst his previous music videos have captured the flair and feeling of the songs well, unfortunately this one, even with the sexy and sultry chart topper Rihanna just lacks his usual style and swagger.

Have a look for yourself and let me know your thoughts…

One to watch: trip >

Alex Child aka Trip grew up in Hammersmith, West London. After the blur of college and a set of A levels that spelt DUDE, Trip found himself making and performing music across the capital at mates studios, on pirate radio stations and at open mic nights as a live vocalist and MC.

After winning numerous Jump-off ‘one bout MC battles’ and hosting the DMC world championships, a chance meeting with the Scratch Perverts led to another chance meeting with Killa Kela. Not long after, Trip was touring the world with both acts, supporting bands such as NERD, Justin Timberlake, Busta Rhymes, Redman and Outkast.

Since moving to Holloway Boulevard in North London, Trip began to pen his debut solo album collaborating with James Rushent from Does It Offend you Yeah? and producer Lance Thomas (Ladytron etc). Now completed, the album ‘ShortCuts‘ is a tragi-comic kaleidoscope of city life as seen through the eyes of a 24 year old Londoner. Think The Streets and The Twang vs the Arctic Monkeys and The Clash with a slight hint of Lily Allen – Trip fuses melodic indie-rock beats with slight hip-hop treats evident in songs such as limited 7″ release of the irreverent rant that was Who\’s That, which picked up specialist radio play and was voted Tune of the Week in DJ Magazine. Music Week has also tipped Trip as “one to watch”…

As all the songs on ShortCuts are lyrical vignettes based around Holloway Road ( Holloway Boulevard!), North London, Trip decided to shoot an entire movie for the album rather than occasional videos for individual singles. Called DayTrip, the movie was shot by 11 different directors over a 24 hour period. Each director chose a song from the album and the film was shot in the running order of the album. Each director had 2 hours with Trip to shoot their video before he moved onto a different location and director to shoot another song from the album. Each director then had 24 hours to edit their short and the entire film was shown 24 hours later in a Soho screening room. The beginning of each video starts with the same shot that ends the video preceding it, and each video has a clock showing real-time as Trip moved through his 24hour journey.

DayTrip‘ will be released free accompanying the new single ‘River Phoenix’ – check out an acoustic version below – which is released on independent label Autonomy Recordings with the album ‘ShortCuts‘ coming soon…
