Celebrity: Beyond 15 minutes of fame >

I came across this great article from PR Week in which celebrity and superstardom are discussed. An area desired by many, but achieved by few they discuss how you can ensure your celebrity client stays on the A-list?

An example of this being the frumpy middle-aged woman with bushy hair who initially disturbed the crowds but soon opened her mouth and instantly became a worldwide hit. Ordinarily you would think that’s very unlikely, but Susan Boyle did this wowing the audience while auditioning for Britain’s Got Talent, it quickly became the most viewed YouTube clip ever.

With reality shows currently saturating TV schedules with promise to transform ‘ordinary’ people into stars overnight industry figures including Sara Lee, publicity and comms manager at Talkback Thames, Taylor Herring managing partner James Herring and The Corporation CEO and founder Gary Farrow.

It offers some good points on celebrity standing and longevity with the best practices for maintaining an individual’s popularity.

Click here for the full-story and click here for an interesting blog spot from another idustry big-gun, Chris McCafferty, Director of Shine Communications digital offering who comments on Susan Boyle’s widespread fame and who is financially capitolising on this.

ENJOY.

Just for laughs: CollegeHumor >

The online comedy sketch series CollegeHumor has been entertaining the masses for over ten years now, it is apparent that there is no sign of the jokes drying up anytime soon too.

Like the name suggests the New York based CH team creates original sketch comedy, film and television parodies, animation, and music videos focused at targeting a student demographic but the appeal can go far beyond this age group.

Offering videos, multiple times a week on their website collegehumor.com and via YouTube, their successes include the 2009 Webby Award nominated Awkward Rap for Best Comedy: Individual Short or Episode and the mediahustler favourite Street Fighter: The Later Years series which was nominated by YouTube’s Video Awards in the category of “Series”

Amongst other funny shorts, the stand-alone viral comedy shorts Hardly Working and Jake & Amir are a must as well as the music video parody Brohemian Rhapsody below.

CH Originals’ Prank War  series, which documents the escalating practical jokes between two members of the CollegeHumor staff (Streeter Seidell and Amir Blumenfeld) are another highlight and has gained national notoriety after one of the two employees staged a public marriage proposal to the other’s girlfriend on his behalf. The incident was known as “The Yankee Prankee.” That video was later shown on VH1’s 40 greatest pranks part 2 and can be seen below:

Past guests on the show include Paul Rudd, Andy Samberg, and Michael Cera and with an ever-growing fan base you would be a fool to miss out – get involved, it would be rude not to!

Sing-a-long with Wootton…>

xs

Dan Wootton, the News of the World’s Celeb XS columnist has himself gone to excess, in a bid to increase his popularity he has recorded his very own theme tune!

Not content with getting the gossip on our favourite/worst celebrities and getting photographed with as many famous faces as possible he has only gone and done a ‘Joe Mott’! With the help of Take That protégé Gary Go – who, with Wootton will open for TT during their tour this year – have created a rather catchy tune, one of which mediahustler is struggling to get out of his head…

Check out the tune by clicking here.

RESPECT!

Matthew Williamson’s designer collection for the Swedish clothing store H&M continues on May 14 with a new summer collection. Following on from Williamson’s recent limited fashion range which launched late last month in approximately 200 shops, the respected London designer has now created a special collection that will be available in around 1,600 H&M’s worldwide.

The first menswear range Williamson has ever designed, he has successfully fused classic pastel hues with electro designs and bold graphic designs with retro fits – mixing a dapper young gentleman’s style with hot colours and covetable ethnic influences the range is sure to be a hit for those summer days and heated nights.

“I have aimed to incorporate a styling juxtaposition where global inspiration is fused with quintessential English style,” says Williamson.

Interact at The White Dress Project >

Carnaby Street, with its rich fashion heritage, is the ideal setting for a brand new endeavour from London College of Fashion, ‘Occupying Spaces: The White Dress Project’. Put together by MA Fashion Curation students, and directed by Amy de la Haye and Judith Clark, the exhibition features a number of identical white dresses, each individually styled and put on show to interact with the gallery space. The aim of the project is to present garments in new and diverse ways so you’ll find an upside-down dress, a silhouette of a dress and even a dress you can choose to walk over – nothing more fun than audience participation! And keeping with that theme, there’s also an opportunity to design your own white dress and clip it to a wall, becoming part of the exhibit yourself and even, most satisfyingly, a blank canvas dress with the words ‘comments please’ written above it, inviting all to have a scribble.

The White Dress Project runs seven days a week until 23rd April at 65 – 67 Broadwick Street.

ABCs not as easy as 1,2,3 >

So it appears that the national ‘red-top’ tabloid and other middle-market newspapers have managed to increase their circulations over the last few months, this is of course great news after the recent decline however, it appears that after ABC carried out their investigations a spot check revealed multiple sales copies had in fact been sent to airlines and other organisations. According to one senior newspaper executive, the checkers found a wide disparity between the claimed distribution figure and the reality.

What us media folk understand to be circulation figures as read by Joe & Jane Public has in fact become clearly untrue, these high numbers are quite worryingly attributed to bulk deals made in which high quantities are often just sold as a whole and not necessarily all distributed.

Could this explain for example the increase of sales of Express Newspapers’ Daily Star which rose 5.01% from February and its year-on-year circulation soared 13.52% to record a circulation of 819,880 last month (according to figures released Thursday by the Audit Bureau of Circulations) or could part of this rise be attributed to it’s steady growth since it slashed its cover price by 15p to just 20p in November? It is all very questionable but difficult to confirm as all other tabloid papers apart from the Daily Mail also sold more copies each day in March than in February.

A lot of the initial hype as to how these increases were being made was largely said to be down to the media-heavy coverage given to Jade Goody’s unfortunate demise which had a nation captivated – with the exception of Mail readers – although this information does make one question how transparent the press really is it does also evoke thoughts as to what news we are all actively seeking now, be it hard-hitting investigation, breaking news, celeb stories or sport….hmmm, confusing.
